Social Structures will explore the theme of architecture as a reflection of society, featuring photographs of sacred temples by Kenro Izu, mixed media images of war-torn cities by Susanne Slavick, and photo-realistic paintings of the rebuilt world financial center by Antonio Petracca. Izu’s images of the weathered temples of South Asia mirrors the poverty, sickness and political oppression felt by its people. Susanne Slavick works in mixed media, adding an element of fantasy to photographs of war-torn countries. As with Restoration (Threshold I), she incorporates figures and decorative patterns to images of blown-up buildings and roadways, making a commentary on innocent lives lost and the propaganda used to mask these atrocities. Antonio Petracca’s photo-realistic paintings from the series 10 are based on images taken ten years after the attacks of 9/11, and express the resolve of American people.
